Historical sketch

  • June 16, 1871. The Olonets Natural-Industrial and Historical-Ethnographic Museum at the local Provincial Statistical Committee was founded by order of Governor Grigory Grigorievich Grigoriev.

  • June 29, 1873. The museum is open to the public at the same time as the grand opening of the monument to Peter I on Petrovsky (Round) Square.

  • In 1876, the first catalog of the museum's objects was published that was prepared by supervisor Alexander Ivanovich Ivanov.

  • In 1880, women's headdresses decorating with pearls from the museum's collections were presented at an exhibition of sea and river fishing in Berlin, and it was awarded an Honorable Mention.

  • 1889. The second catalog of the museum that was compiled by the senior official of special assignments under the Olonets governor, Phlegon Sergeyevich Shelyukov has been published.

  • 1896. All-Russian Industrial and Art Exhibition during the annual fair in Nizhny Novgorod. Before sending the selected items to the fair, the museum opened an exhibition of them in the building of the governor's house.

  • 1901. The Statistical Committee sent to Paris for the international exhibition "handicrafts" from the museum's collection.

  • 1902. "The first international exhibition of historical and modern costume" in St. Petersburg, where the museum presented ancient women's "outstanding" costumes from several counties of the province.

  • 1906. During the turbulent time of the First Russian Revolution, a scientific and art exhibition opens in Petrozavodsk, in which the museum participates with exhibits from the church-historical, ethnographic, artistic, numismatic and other departments.

  • 1913. The museum was taken over by the "Society for the Study of the Olonets Province" under the chairmanship of the Vice-governor, local historian and bibliographer A.F. Shidlovsky.

  • 1918. The Provincial Historical and Ethnographic Museum was opened on the basis of the collections of the Olonets Museum. Since 1918, the museum has been subordinated to the Department of Public Education at the Olonets Gubernatorial Executive Committee, later – the Olonets Commissariat of Public Education.

  • 1925. The Karelian Research Society and the Olonets Scientific Expedition, which included employees of the State Russian Museum, played a significant role in stabilizing the museum and implementing the plan for its reconstruction according to the "regional principle"

  • 1928. The museum gets a new name - Karelian State. Edward Gulling is the supervisor of the republic, personally played a big role in the reorganization. Ethnographer-local historian Stepan Andreevich Makariev is appointed director of the museum. The Karelian Bureau of Local Lore was established at the museum to guide and plan the activities of local lore organizations of the republic in accordance with the issues of socialist construction.

  • 1929. he KASSR was closed and the building of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral was transferred to the museum premises due to resolution of the SNK. The museum moved to this building in 1931-1933. The first exposition in the new place appeared in 1931 and was dedicated to the successes of the economic development of Karelia, the history of the revolutionary movement and the civil war.

  • 1940. With the formation of the Karelo-Finnish Union Socialist Republic, the museum is renamed the Central State Museum of the KFSSR. The architectural ensemble on Kizhi Island became a part of the museum as a branch.

  • 1941-1944. The museum stopped working during the Great Patriotic War and Finnish troops occupied Petrozavodsk. Some of the museum collections were evacuated to the Arkhangelsk region. Many museum items remained in the occupied city.

  • 1944. The museum has resumed its work. 12 boxes with exhibits (porcelain, paintings, church utensils, books, etc.) arrived from the evacuation.

  • 1945. The Museum is subordinated to the Committee for Cultural and Educational Institutions under the Council of Ministers of the KFSSR. In 1945-1979, the main departments of the Museum of Local lore and the corresponding structure of the permanent exhibition were formed.

  • 1953-1956. The museum was renamed the State Museum of Local History of the Karelo-Finnish SSR, and after 1956 it became the Karelian State Museum of Local Lore.

  • 1955. Petrovsky Museum-Reserve in the village of Marcial Waters, as a department, became part of the State Museum of Local History. Today it is a museum-branch of the history of the First Russian resort "Marcial Waters".

  • 1960. The State Museum of Fine Arts was created on the basis of the art collections of the KGKM.

  • 1961-1965. A department (since 1964 – a branch) of "Kizhi" was organized in the structure of the Karelian State Museum of Local Lore. In 1966, Kizhi became an independent state historical and architectural museum.

  • 1979-1993. The period of renovation of the museum building, development of projects for moving the museum to the buildings of the historical and architectural ensemble on Lenin Square. Development of the museum network in the republic.

  • 1980. The museum receives an additional building at 5 Engels Street., and opens its first exhibition "Folk Decorative and Applied Art of Karelia" in it.

  • 1980. The Folk Museum in the Veps village of Sheltozero becomes a department, and since 1987 — a branch of the Karelian State Museum of Local Lore. Today it is the Sheltozer Veps Ethnographic Museum named after Rurik Petrovich Lonin.

  • 1993 - 2002. Placement and activity of the museum on Lenin Square in the conditions of repair work, development of projects for the development of the museum buildings of the historical and architectural ensemble of the Round Square.

  • 1998-2003. There is a system of long-term exhibitions replacing the permanent exposition of the museum, including exhibitions "On the threshold of the ancient universe", "Kalevatar", "Petrozavodsk. Flight at an altitude of 300 years." This system lasted until 2008.

  • 2000-2014.The Museum annually organizes the republican contest "Museum of the Year", which has made a great contribution to the development of partnerships and activities of the museum network of Karelia.

  • 2002-2003. By the 300th anniversary of Petrozavodsk, the first stage of the reconstruction of the Round Square ensemble has been completed. The complex of rooms of the Hall of the Noble Assembly was opened.

  • 2002-2008. The concept and general architectural and artistic solution of the main exposition of the museum have been developed.

  • 2004-2010. Restoration and reconstruction of the building on Lenin Square, 1 continues.

  • 2006. The first international and interregional scientific and practical conference "Museums in the Northern dimension" dedicated to the 135th anniversary of the museum. Holding this conference for the anniversaries of the museum has become a tradition (2011, 2016, 2021).

  • 2006-2008. An international project between the museums of the province of Westerbotten (Sweden) and the Republic of Karelia (Russia). Karelian State Museum of Local Lore organizes a traveling exhibition "Petroglyphs of Karelia: the image of the world and the worlds of images". After the work of the exhibition in Swedish museums, it continues to be one of the most popular traveling exhibitions.

  • 2010. June 8th The opening of the halls of the first stage of the new permanent exhibition of the museum took place: "Natural features of the region", "Stone Chronicle", "Petrovsky Plants", "By the highest decree".   • 2011, September 21. The Karelian State Museum of Local Lore has been renamed the National Museum of the Republic of Karelia.

  • 2012-2013. The project "Natural Economy" of the National Museum of the Republic of Karelia becomes the winner of the IX grant competition "Changing Museum in a changing world" of the V. Potanin Charitable Foundation. As a result of the project, a new ethnographic section of the permanent exhibition was created.

  • 2012-2014. Restoration of the Melkin House – the main building of the Sheltozer Veps Ethnographic Museum-branch. As part of the Russian-Finnish project to create a network of ethno-cultural centers “ECHO”, an architectural and planning concept of the museum was developed and a new barn appeared next to the Melkins' House.

  • 2013-2014. As a result of the Russian-Finnish project "Museum for the Family" of the Karelia cross-border cooperation program, a space of the same name was created for family visitors in the building at 5 Engels Street.

  • 2014-2015. The project "Family values unite" is supported by the state program "Development of Culture and tourism for 2013-2020". A new permanent exhibition "Vepsian peasant yard. Vepsän tannaz" and an ethnocultural center is equipped in the Sheltozer branch Museum, and an exhibition "Nature of Karelia" has opened in Petrozavodsk.

  • 2017-2018. The project "Bear Corner" of the National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan became the winner of the VIII grant competition "Museums of the Russian North" of Severstal. As a result of the project, the "Museum for the Family" space has been transformed into an interactive platform "Bear Corner".

  • 2018-2021. The Museum participates in the Russian-Finnish project "Interactive History" of the Karelia cross-border cooperation program. The interactive exposition "The History of the Round Square", the layout of the square of the period 1775-1785, a binocular with visual reconstructions, the first museum mobile application and new educational programs have been created

  • 2018-2021 The project "Laboratory of Northern Design" of the National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan became the winner of the "Museum 4.0" competition of the "Museum without Borders" program of the V. Potanin Charitable Foundation. For the first time in the history of the republic, a study on the history of Karelian design was conducted, several books were published, exhibitions were created, a documentary film "Karelian Design" was created, a museum store was opened.

  • 2019. Petrozavodsk State University with the museum is organizing a scientific and practical conference "Marcial waters in the history of Karelia and Russia" to mark the 300th anniversary of the first Russian resort.

  • 2019-2021. Restoration of the House of the caretaker of the resort and the Church of the Apostle Peter in Marcial Waters. Preparation of the project of a new exposition of the museum-branch of the history of the first Russian resort.

  • 2020. Karelian Front Museum - a branch of the National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan was created on behalf of the President of the Russian Federation For the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War

  • 2021. Monument to Charles (Karl Karlovich) Gascoigne was installed on the initiative of the National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Petrozavodsk. At the initiative of the National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan, a monument to Charles (Karl Karlovich) has been erected in Petrozavodsk Gascoigne, an outstanding metallurgist and organizer of production, the supervisor of the Olonets factories in 1786 – 1803.
